Thank you, but it's time
Posted On: Sep 23, 2016

I have had the pleasure and privilege to lead the Collin County Deputies Association for the past 3 years and ten months as your president.  It has always been a tremendous privilege for one simple reason; you as my peers voted time and again for me to lead your organization.  The time has come, however to move over and let someone else continue to lead you into the future.  My wife and I founded America’s Defenders Foundation in 2016 and it has taken off.  After much deliberation we feel we can impact law enforcement all over Texas with the foundation and we have got to see where that takes us.  I will be stepping down as president on Oct. 1st.

First, we have done a lot together and I’m extremely proud of where we have been and where we are going.  The past four years has seen an uptick in membership and charitable acts.  We have supported members with financial hardships and medical hardships, at times from out of state.  We have created very solid relationships with the other large police associations in the county and have grown to really work together.

The association has participated in many police association charity events every year to support various causes.  The Collin County Deputies Association created the Operation: Blue Christmas program and last year saw Santa flown into a McKinney neighborhood by Texas DPS’ helicopter.  In December of 2015 CCDA partnered with Frisco, Allen, and Plano to host the first Thin Blue Line Ball to give an evening back to local law enforcement.  The ball will continue under America’s Defenders Foundation so we can incorporate business sponsors and grow the ball.  The next ball is already scheduled for April 29, 2017 at Rock Creek Ranch in McKinney.  Keep an eye out for updates on the foundation’s Facebook page.

The Collin County Deputies Association has grown, matured, and fought for law enforcement in this county and will continue to do so.  It hasn’t always been easy and we’ve developed some great relationships along the way.  We’ve burned a few to, however those weren’t very beneficial relationships to begin with.

Sheriff-elect Jim Skinner is taking office in January of 2017 and I believe it may be good to have a new president to work and grow that relationship.  To be clear, I have enjoyed my many conversations with Skinner and I believe he is going to do some pretty good work at the Sheriff’s Office.  I believe that he and I could work well together in the future as well.  I also believe that with a new Sheriff the president of CCDA should have the time available to tend to that relationship.  That is where I believe I would have the shortcoming as I really feel I need to dedicate the time to the foundation.  I wish Jim Skinner all the support I can muster as he takes over and begins his time as Sheriff of Collin County.  There are many items on the list that need attention and I am confident he will start knocking those items off that list, however it will take time.

Finally, thank you to the boards that have served with me these past four years.  It has been you guys that have lifted me up and allowed me to navigate where we all thought this association should go.  You guys are the future of this organization and I am confident you are capable to taking CCDA into the future.

Jared Clark is no stranger to CCDA.  He is the longest tenured board member of the association and I have had the honor of him being Vice President the past four years.  I am very comfortable and excited to see where Jared and his board will take the association in the years to come.  As members you should have all the confidence in the world in Jared looking out for your interests.

Thank you to all the members that had confidence in me over the years and thank you for your friendship.  Today’s society is hardening towards law enforcement and we have to have each other’s backs every day.  I had yours and you had mine.  That is what I’ll cherish the most as I look back on my time on the board.

Sincerely,

Mike Rumfield
